Pre-conference Workshops, 1-3 days 

Workshops of 1 – 3 days will be presented by internationally known cognitive educators and researchers.  These workshops will be posted on the IACEP website as soon as the program committee makes its selections.  Fees will be $50.00 per day.  Workshops will be cancelled and registration fees refunded if enrollment is not sufficient to cover costs.  Please see link to pre-conference workshop registration and lodging information. Special Evening Events

Museum of Appalachia (Monday, bus leaves at 6:00

Enjoy an evening steeped in the culture and heritage of the European settlers of the Appalachian region.  We will board buses for the half-hour ride outside of Knoxville to the Museum of Appalachia located in Norris, Tennessee.  The Museum consists of a frontier-type village with some 65 acres including thirty log structures and cabins, among them: a school, church, barns, smokehouses, all of which are fully furnished with artifacts from Southern Appalachia.  In addition, the Hall of Fame, Display Barn, and People’s Building contain thousands of regional items:  folk art, tools, musical instruments, baskets, toys, animal traps, rifles, etc., just to name a few that testify to the ingenuity of some of the Appalachian region’s European pioneers.  Attendees will also enjoy the extensive Craft, Gift, and Antique Shop.   Following your self-guided tour of the Museum property, everyone will enjoy a southern style barbecue dinner complete will all the fixing’s.  The evening will conclude with live entertainment from the Museum of Appalachia Bluegrass Band.   The cost including transportation, museum admission and the dinner meal is $35 per person.

Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center (Tuesday, bus leaves at 6:00)

Spend an evening learning of the Native American culture of the region at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center.  We will board buses for the 45-minute ride outside of Knoxville to the Heritage Center located in Townsend, Tennessee at the doorstep of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The mission of the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center is to preserve, protect and promote the unique history and rich culture of the residents and Native Americans who inhabited the East Tennessee mountain communities that were incorporated into the Great Smoky Mountains Nation Park and its surroundings. The facility includes exhibits concerning Native Americans that lived in the region from 3000BCE to the 1800’s.  These aspects of Native American culture include games they played, music they enjoyed, and the dances they performed.  Visitors will learn about plant life they used as medicines along with a reconstructed winter house they used to protect against winter weather conditions.  Live demonstrations of Native American culture will occur from members of the Cherokee tribal nation.  The cost including transportation, museum admission and the dinner meal is $34 per person. 

President’s Banquet and Reception

Held at the Hilton Hotel Ballroom, Salon C.  Our president, Jerry Carlson will give a brief speech.  Cost is $34.00, cash bar available.

American 4th of July Holiday Community Celebration

Following the conclusion of the President’s Banquet, everyone is invited to join the local community at a 4th of July celebration.  It takes place in a large public park adjacent to the UTCC.  The holiday celebration features a live performance of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and concludes with a massive fireworks display at the end of the event. The President’s Banquet overlaps with part of the festivities.  Fireworks will begin when it gets dark, around 21:30. (This event is hosted by the city of Knoxville at no charge to those who attend.)

If you are bringing family members or guests who will not be registered for the conference, you do have the opportunity to purchase additional tickets for the evening events as well as for the President’s Reception and Banquet on Wednesday, July 4th.
